Tractor borrowers, their crop cycles, custom hiring and the regional differences that shape repayment.
Farmers with 2 to 15 acres, buying a first or replacement tractor. About a third earn extra by custom hiring: ploughing and hauling for neighbours at ₹800 to ₹1,200 an hour.
Instalments are half-yearly, after the kharif harvest (October to December) and the rabi harvest (March to May). A due date that misses the harvest window turns a good borrower into a delinquent one.
Field staff should know the local harvest dates. A call a week after the harvest, when the crop has been sold, collects more than any call before it.
